The children, who had been bored before, were now full of joy and energy, playing with their new toys. Pak Dedi was very proud of Serena. “You’ve taught us all about the importance of creativity and bringing happiness to the village,” he said. Mina is a half Korean and Half Vietnamese girl who is learning about the Vu Lan Festival that is celebrated on June 15th. She sees her parents setting up an altar and preparing food and learns to make a sweet rice cake with her mother. She is told that the festival is meant to honor parents and ancestors with offerings made at home and at the Vietnamese temple. Her family visits a temple and prays. Afterwards, they light and hang a paper lantern on a tree. The next day the family packs up old clothes and toys to give to their local Vietnamese charity. Mina is happy to remember her ancestors and help others, looking forward to doing it again next year

Mikoto was an orphan who grew up with his foster parents, Sashimoto and Kenimura. Early in the morning, he used to help his parents with the household chores. He used to fetch water from a nearby deep well to water their vegetables in the backyard. His parents owned a bakery where Shokupan was their best seller. After school, he helped in the bakery until he became a famous baker in town. Sashimoto and Kenimura were very proud of Mikoto. They believed that Mikoto was their lucky charm to progress in their business. In return, they gave him all the luxuries in life – a mansion, car, and even expensive jewelry pieces. After ten months, Mikoto seldom went to the bakery because he became addicted to gaming and liquor. He even sold his car.
