One day, I met Kirby in the park. Then we decided to go on an adventure. First, we went to Japan and saw a big volcano. It was very beautiful. After that, we went to a hotel and stayed for two days. On the first day, we had dinner. It was delicious! On the second day, we visited the zoo. There were lions, capybaras, and monkeys. We had so much fun! Then we went to a toy shop and bought a Kirby doll. On the third day, as we were heading home, the volcano suddenly erupted! Kirby and I ran away as fast as we could. Kirby shouted, “Hurry up! Let’s get on the plane!” So, we quickly left Japan. Four hours later, we arrived home safely. We had so much fun in Japan!

The story tells of a child and mother who have come into a homeless shelter due to domestic violence in their home. The child is nervous about their new home, but a small, scruffy grey and brown dog named Scarlett welcomes the family and tells them about Quanada house. Quanada house is a home for parents and children that people stay at when their home isn't safe. It is a safe place that looks like a big house with an upstairs that has 5 bedrooms. Throughout the story, Scarlett shows the family their room, the dining room and kitchen, and the playroom. Scarlett the shelter dog helps the child make their bed up in their new room and brings toys to help it feel more like home. The child is sad about leaving their home but scarlett makes them feel better. Then they go downstairs and watch tv and eat a snack in the family room. Thursday Harvey gets his first paycheck and gets very sad. He was supposed to make 100 dollars but the check is only 70 dollars. Mr. Smith sees that Harvey gets sad and explains to him what deductions are. He starts with federal taxes which is about 8 dollars from Harvey's paycheck. The government collects taxes from all citizens to built bridges and highways and fund the army. He then explains what the social security deduction is for and also, medicare, state and city taxes. At the end Harvey is glad that the government is thinking to save money for him so he gets it when he retires. Sparky is Harvey's dog. He is sad when Harvey is sad and then gets happy at the end when Harvey understands how taxes work.
